Question Regarding Full Receipt of Qualified Benefits

Does anyone know someone who actually gets all the benefits they're eligible for? I ask this question to all Veteran services that help military/military families receive benefits, and most cannot say with confidence that they or someone they are working with is receiving everything they are qualified for. Most veterans get so frustrated with the process that they settle for what they have and leave the rest on the table. IT SHOULDN'T BE LIKE THIS.

That "someone" would be my spouse and me, ChivasDMChivasDM.

The system is certainly slow and bureaucratic, but we've persevered and prevailed. My 40% VA disability rating was a challenging slog to get, but it's accurate and we're keeping an eye on a few more potential zingers.

I agree that those who most need the help that the VA should provide are frequently those who are least able to navigate the gantlet. As a government benefit, that problem is also prevalent in other programs like Medicare, Social Security, federal income taxes, and most state property taxes.

We can all use the support of a Veteran Service Officer, local veterans' support organizations, and our state Veterans Affairs offices… along with appealing incorrect/adverse rulings and even using lawyers to challenge the system. Many times it's essential to have a spouse, fellow vet, or caregiver in the room helping with taking notes, keeping the Q&A on track, and making sure the provider understands the issues.

Other than that, what would you do to improve the system to be more like it should be?

Congratulations. I'm finally overjoyed to at least meet one person who has persevered.

The Biloxi VA has a great Health Benefits department. Very informative and thorough. Unfortunately, there are only two employees. I would recommend expanding the Health Benefits Department into a department of benefits specialists who are tasked with reviewing veterans' case files and evaluating (a) what they are receiving, (b) what they are not receiving but are eligible for, and (c) what the next steps are to apply for any eligible benefits they would be interested in receiving.

This would allow each member to then make an appointment with their VSO or pursue their benefits individually.

Great Question. I would love to hear any other thoughts on the matter.
